It communicates with the primary switch to confirm the door is properly latched before allowing the oven's magnetron and other components to receive power. This switch plays a key role in preventing the microwave from running while the door is open.

The GE Oven Secondary Switch can fail from repeated stress caused by opening and closing the door thousands of times over the life of the appliance. The switch contacts can wear out, corrode, or burn, which disrupts the signal needed to complete the circuit and allow normal operation. A faulty secondary switch can also blow the oven's internal fuse, since the interlock system is designed to cut power when something goes wrong.

Watch for these signs that the secondary switch may need to be replaced:

- Microwave does not start or respond when the door is closed and start is pressed

- Oven runs briefly then shuts off unexpectedly

- Interior fuse blows repeatedly after replacement

- Microwave runs when the door is open, which is a serious safety concern

- No power to the display or controls after closing the door

- Oven starts only when the door is held at a specific angle
