It cycles on periodically as part of the automatic defrost system, working alongside the defrost thermostat and timer to prevent ice buildup from blocking the cooling process.

The GE Refrigerator Defrost Heater can fail due to a burned-out heating element, a broken wire in the harness, or damage caused by prolonged exposure to moisture and temperature extremes inside the freezer compartment. When the heater stops working, frost accumulates on the evaporator coils unchecked, eventually restricting airflow and causing the refrigerator to lose its ability to cool properly.

These symptoms may indicate your defrost heater needs to be replaced:

- Refrigerator or freezer not staying cold enough

- Visible frost or ice buildup on the back wall of the freezer compartment

- Food spoiling faster than normal despite correct temperature settings

- Warm air coming from vents that should be delivering cold air

- Refrigerator runs constantly without cycling off

- Frost buildup causing unusual noise from the evaporator fan

- No cooling at all after the coils have become completely blocked with ice

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0569/6189/2437/files/ge-refrigerator-defrost-heater-wr55x31113.jpg?v=1792200664
