Whirlpool Fridge Water Valve (W10408179)

The Whirlpool Fridge Water Valve controls the flow of water into the refrigerator. It opens and closes to send water to the ice maker and, on models with a dispenser, to the water dispenser. It helps the appliance fill on demand and stop flow when the fill cycle ends.

This valve can fail from mineral buildup, debris in the inlet screen, internal sticking, or a burned-out solenoid coil. A split valve body or loose fittings can also cause leaks. Low household water pressure or a pinched water line can strain the valve and lead to weak flow or incomplete fills.

If you are troubleshooting water supply issues, these symptoms can point to a problem with this valve:

Ice maker stops making ice or makes small, hollow, or misshapen cubes

Water dispenser flow is slow, weak, or stops completely

Ice maker will not fill with water, or fills only sometimes

Water continues to drip into the ice maker after the fill cycle

Water leaks near the back of the refrigerator or around the inlet connections

Buzzing or clicking at the rear of the unit when water is requested, with no or little water delivered
