The Whirlpool Dryer Belt is a looped drive belt that connects the motor pulley to the drum. It transfers motor power so the drum tumbles at the correct speed during a cycle. If the belt slips or breaks, the motor may run but the drum will not turn.
Common causes of failure include normal wear that thins or cracks the belt over time, heat buildup that dries out the rubber, and excess load strain that stretches the belt. A belt can also wear faster if the drum rollers, idler pulley, or drum support surfaces bind and increase drag.
These symptoms can help you decide if replacing the belt matches your problem:
- Drum does not turn, but you can hear the motor running
- Dryer starts, then quickly stops as the motor continues to hum
- Clothes stay wet because the drum is not tumbling
- A burning rubber smell during operation
- Thumping, squealing, or slapping sounds from the cabinet as the belt slips or frays
- Drum turns by hand very easily with little resistance when the dryer is off
