The Whirlpool Door Latch secures the appliance door in the closed position and signals to the control that the door is shut. It helps the unit start and continue a cycle by keeping the door from opening and by confirming the door-closed status during operation.

Failure can happen from repeated slamming, normal wear on the latch hook or internal switch, misalignment from a loose hinge or door strike, or moisture and residue buildup that affects the latch mechanism. A cracked housing, bent catch, or worn internal contacts can also prevent the latch from engaging or sending the correct signal.

If you are troubleshooting a door that will not close, lock, or register as closed, these symptoms may point to a failing door latch:

    Door will not click shut or pops back open

    Cycle will not start because the door is not detected as closed

    Unit stops mid-cycle and indicates the door opened

    Intermittent operation when you press on the door

    Door feels loose, misaligned, or requires extra force to latch

    Visible damage to the latch hook, housing, or mounting points
