The Whirlpool Washer Pressure Switch monitors the water level in the tub and signals the control to start agitation, pause filling, or begin draining. It senses air pressure through a small hose connected to the tub and changes electrical contacts when the target level is reached.

Common failures come from a clogged or leaking pressure hose, a loose hose connection, or wear inside the switch that keeps it from changing states at the right time. Detergent residue, lint, or debris can also affect the air path and lead to incorrect water-level sensing.
