The Whirlpool Washer Lid Lock helps keep the washer lid closed and verifies that the lid is shut so the control can start or continue a cycle. When the lock engages, it signals the washer to allow filling, agitating, spinning, and draining. If the lock does not engage or the switch inside does not report the correct status, the washer may stop for safety.
Common causes of failure include a worn or stuck locking mechanism, a failed internal switch, broken plastic from repeated lid slams, moisture intrusion, or damage to the wiring connection at the lock. Electrical issues can also prevent the lock from actuating or sending the lid-closed signal to the control.
Look for these symptoms to help decide whether this lid lock matches your problem:
- The washer will not start even though the lid is closed.
- The lid will not lock, or it locks and then unlocks during the cycle.
- The cycle stops before spin, or the washer will not spin and drains poorly because the lid status is not confirmed.
- The lid stays locked after the cycle ends and will not release.
- You hear repeated clicking at the lid area without the cycle progressing.
- The washer reports a lid lock or lid switch error and will not complete the cycle.
