The lid switch assembly is a safety component that tells your top load washer whether the lid is open or closed before allowing certain functions to run. When you close the lid, the switch sends a signal that allows the washer to spin and agitate, keeping the machine from operating when the lid is up and hands could be near moving parts.

Lid switches commonly fail from repeated opening and closing that wears out the internal contacts over time, or from the plastic actuator tab breaking off when the lid is shut too hard. Moisture, detergent residue, and general age can also cause the switch contacts to corrode or stick, preventing the switch from reading the lid position correctly.
