The Whirlpool Start Device helps a refrigerator compressor start and run. It manages the electrical start circuit so the compressor can turn on, reach speed, and continue running during normal cooling cycles.
Common failures include worn internal contacts, heat damage from poor ventilation or heavy compressor load, and electrical stress from power surges. Over time, the device can develop high resistance, crack, or burn, which can prevent the compressor from starting or cause it to shut off soon after it tries to run.
Look for these symptoms to help decide if the start device is the source of the problem:
Refrigerator not cooling or temperatures rising in both fresh food and freezer sections
Compressor will not start, even though interior lights and controls work
Repeated clicking sounds from the compressor area as it tries to start and then stops
Compressor starts briefly, then shuts off within seconds to a minute
Start device shows signs of overheating, melting, cracking, or a burnt odor

- A 15% restocking fee applies to eligible returns.
- Shipping is non-refundable.
- Items returned without approval won’t be accepted.
