The Whirlpool Ice Maker produces ice by cycling water into a mold, freezing it, and ejecting the cubes into the storage bin. It works with the refrigerator’s water inlet and internal controls to time the fill, freeze, and harvest steps so ice is made in repeat batches.

Common causes of failure include a worn motor module or internal gears, a faulty mold heater that cannot release cubes, an internal thermostat or sensor that does not trigger the harvest cycle, or electrical damage from power surges and moisture. Ice production can also stop if the unit stalls mid-cycle or if the ejector mechanism cannot move freely.
