The Whirlpool Thermal Cutoff is a safety device used in dryers to stop electrical power if temperatures rise above a set limit. It helps prevent overheating by opening the circuit to the heating system or the motor circuit, depending on the model design. When it opens, the dryer may lose heat, stop running, or fail to start.
Common causes of failure include restricted airflow from a clogged lint screen, blocked venting, or a crushed or long vent run that traps heat. A failed cycling thermostat, high-limit thermostat, or heating element problem can also cause overheating that trips the cutoff. Once a thermal cutoff opens, it does not reset.
