The Whirlpool Oven Igniter lights the bake or broil burner in a gas oven. It heats up to ignite the gas and helps the gas valve open so the burner can reach and hold the set temperature.
Common failures come from normal wear in the igniter’s heating element. Over time it can weaken and draw less current, so the gas valve may not open even if the igniter glows. It can also crack or burn out, which stops ignition.
If your oven has any of these issues, this part may be the cause:
Oven will not heat, but the display and controls work
Igniter glows but the burner does not light
Burner lights after a long delay
Oven heats unevenly or struggles to reach set temperature
Burner cycles off early and temperature drops during baking
No glow from the igniter when bake or broil is selected
