The Whirlpool Dryer Thermostat monitors dryer temperature and opens or closes an internal switch to help keep heat within a set range. It works with the heating circuit to reduce overheating and support steady drying performance.
Thermostats can fail from repeated heat cycling, electrical arcing at the contacts, moisture exposure, or lint buildup that causes hotter-than-normal operation. A stuck-open thermostat can stop heat. A stuck-closed thermostat can allow the dryer to run too hot and may trigger other safety cutoffs.
Look for these symptoms to help decide if replacing this thermostat may address your issue:
- Dryer runs but produces no heat
- Clothes take much longer to dry than normal
- Heat cycles on and off too quickly, leading to uneven drying
- Dryer overheats or cabinet feels hotter than normal
- Burning smell or signs of heat stress near the heater or thermostat area
