The Whirlpool Oven Igniter lights the oven burner by heating up and drawing the electrical current needed to open the gas safety valve. When it reaches the right temperature, gas flows to the burner and ignites, allowing the oven to heat and hold a set temperature.
Common causes of failure include normal wear from repeated heat cycles, a weakened igniter that no longer pulls enough current to open the gas valve, cracks or damage to the igniter element, and heat-related damage to the wiring or connector. As the igniter weakens, it may still glow but fail to ignite the burner on time.
These symptoms can help you decide if this part matches your problem:
- Oven will not heat, but the broil burner may still work
- Igniter glows for a long time, but the burner does not light
- Burner lights after a long delay, then cycles off and on with poor temperature control
- Oven heats inconsistently or takes much longer than normal to preheat
