The Whirlpool Evaporator Fan Motor circulates air across the evaporator coil and through the freezer and fresh food sections. It helps move cold air to keep temperatures steady and supports proper cooling and defrost performance.
This motor can fail from normal wear, a seized or damaged bearing, moisture intrusion, ice buildup that blocks the fan, or a failing internal winding. Electrical issues such as a damaged harness, loose connector, or control problem can also stop the motor from running or cause it to run intermittently.
Symptoms that may point to a failed evaporator fan motor include:
- Freezer is cold but the fresh food section is warm
- Weak or no airflow from vents
- Loud humming, squealing, rattling, or grinding sounds from the freezer area
- Fan not running when the door switch is closed and the unit is calling for cooling
- Temperature swings or uneven cooling between compartments
- Frost or ice buildup near the evaporator area with reduced airflow
