The GE Electric Range Surface Element is the heating coil mounted on the cooktop that generates heat for cooking when electricity passes through its resistive wire. It connects to the surface element receptacle and heats up as current flows through it, allowing you to boil, fry, simmer, and cook at a range of temperatures.

A GE electric range surface element can fail from repeated heat cycling over time, which causes the internal wire to weaken, develop hot spots, or break entirely.
