The GE 8" Surface Burner Unit is the large coil heating element that sits on top of your electric range and provides the heat needed to cook food in pots and pans. It plugs into a receptacle in the cooktop and uses electrical resistance to generate heat, with the temperature controlled by the surface burner switch on your range.

A GE 8" Surface Burner Unit can fail from everyday wear, hot and cold cycling that weakens the coil over time, or damage from spills, scorching, or physical impact. The element may develop a break or burned spot in the coil that interrupts the electrical circuit, preventing it from heating properly or at all.

These symptoms can help you decide if the surface burner unit is the cause of your problem:
