The GE Dryer Belt wraps around the drum and connects it to the drive motor and idler pulley, allowing the drum to rotate during each drying cycle. As the motor turns, it pulls the belt to spin the drum, which tumbles your clothes through the heated air and ensures even drying throughout the load.
GE dryer belts typically wear out over time from the heat and friction of daily use, causing the belt to fray, crack, or break entirely. The belt can also slip or stretch if the idler pulley is worn or if the dryer has been overloaded repeatedly, reducing the tension needed to keep the drum spinning properly.
Look for these symptoms to help determine if the dryer belt is the cause of your problem:
- Drum does not spin or rotate when the dryer is running
- Dryer runs and produces heat but clothes come out wet or barely dried
- Squealing, squeaking, or thumping noise during operation
- Drum spins only when pushed by hand but not on its own
- Visible fraying, cracking, or a snapped belt found inside the dryer cabinet
- Dryer starts and runs but stops tumbling mid-cycle
