The Whirlpool Refrigerator Evaporator is the cooling coil inside the freezer section that absorbs heat from the air. Refrigerant flows through the coil and changes state to pull heat out. Air moved by the evaporator fan passes over the coil and circulates through the freezer and into the fresh food compartment to maintain set temperatures.
Common failures include refrigerant leaks at the coil, internal corrosion, and physical damage from impact or improper ice removal. A leak reduces refrigerant charge and lowers cooling capacity. In some cases, the coil can also develop uneven frost patterns when refrigerant flow is disrupted.
These symptoms can help you decide if the evaporator is related to your problem:
- Freezer and refrigerator are both warm even though the compressor runs
- Cooling is weak and takes much longer than normal to reach temperature
- Only a small section of the evaporator frosts up, while the rest stays clear
- Little to no airflow feels cold, even when the fan is operating
- Intermittent cooling that worsens over time
- Signs of oily residue near the evaporator area, which can indicate a refrigerant leak
