The Whirlpool Refrigerator Thermostat senses the temperature inside the fresh food compartment and controls when the cooling system turns on and off. It opens and closes an internal switch based on temperature, helping keep the compartment within the range you set on the control dial.

Common failures come from normal wear in the internal contacts, a drifting temperature calibration, or damage to the capillary tube and sensing bulb. When the thermostat sticks open, the refrigerator may not run when it should. When it sticks closed, the refrigerator may run too long and overcool.
