The Whirlpool Dryer Belt transfers power from the motor to the drum so the drum turns at the correct speed during a cycle. It wraps around the drum and runs through the idler pulley and motor pulley to keep tension and traction while the dryer runs.
The belt can fail from normal wear, heat exposure, and repeated start-stop cycles. Over time it may stretch, glaze, crack, fray, or split. A seized drum roller, stuck idler pulley, or a drum that is hard to turn can also overwork the belt and cause it to break sooner.
Use these symptoms to help decide if replacing the belt matches your issue:
- Dryer runs but the drum does not turn
- Clothes stay wet because the drum is not tumbling
- A thumping, slapping, or squealing sound that changes as the drum tries to move
- Drum turns by hand easily, but will not turn when the dryer starts
- Burning rubber smell or rubber dust near the cabinet base
- Drum movement is uneven or slips during operation
