The Whirlpool Washer Lid Switch detects when the washer lid is closed and signals the control to allow the wash cycle to run. It helps stop agitation and spin when the lid is open and can keep the washer from draining or spinning if the lid is not sensed as closed.
Common failures include a worn or broken switch mechanism, a damaged actuator or strike that no longer presses the switch, loose or corroded electrical contacts, or a cracked housing from repeated lid slams. Wiring at the switch can also loosen over time and interrupt the lid-closed signal.
Use the symptoms below to help decide if this lid switch matches your problem:
- Washer will not start, even though power is on and the timer or cycle is set
- Washer fills but will not agitate
- Washer agitates but will not drain or spin
- Cycle stops when the lid is closed or starts only when the lid is pressed down
- Clicking sound is missing when the lid closes, or the lid must be held in a specific position to run
