The GE Refrigerator Ice Maker is the self-contained unit inside your freezer compartment that produces and harvests ice automatically. It works by filling a mold with water, freezing it, then using a heating element and ejector arm to release the cubes into the ice bin below.
The GE Refrigerator Ice Maker can fail due to a burned-out heating element, a faulty thermostat, a broken ejector arm, or a worn drive motor inside the assembly. Mineral buildup from hard water, freezing issues from temperature fluctuations, or a stuck ice mold can also cause the unit to stop cycling properly over time.
These symptoms can help you decide if the ice maker matches your problem:
- Refrigerator produces no ice at all
- Ice maker runs but does not eject cubes from the mold
- Ice cubes are undersized, misshapen, or clumped together
- Ice maker overflows or fills the bin with water instead of cubes
- Unit makes grinding, clicking, or humming noises during the cycle
- Ice maker cycles continuously without stopping
- Ice production has slowed significantly compared to normal output
